If you’ve been wondering, “Do I really need new brand photos right now?” – you’re not alone. This is a common question, but the truth is there isn’t always one perfect answer (I know, I know).
That said, there are some clear signs that tell you it’s time to invest. As an Indianapolis brand photographer and videographer, I’ve seen clients book sessions at all different points: before a big launch, after a rebrand, when their team expands, or simply because their photos don’t feel like them anymore.
If you’ve been waiting for the “perfect” time, you might be holding yourself back. The right time is often sooner than you think. This blog post will explain why!
My Experience as a Brand Photographer
After photographing and filming brands for over eight years, I’ve seen just about every reason a business invests in visuals. And here’s what I’ve learned:
- There isn’t one “right” answer. Waiting until you have everything perfectly aligned isn’t always the best move.
- Businesses shift constantly. Your visuals need to shift with them.
- Brand photography and video aren’t one-and-done investments. They’re tools you can (and should) update as your business grows.
At the end of the day, your visuals should feel like you and reflect where your business is now (not where you were years ago).
Signs It’s Time for New Brand Photos
Here are some of the biggest indicators that now is the right time for a brand photography session:
You don’t have professional brand photos
If you’re still using phone snapshots or stock images, it’s time for visuals that truly represent you.
Your old photos don’t reflect who you are anymore
Maybe your style has changed, you’ve switched up your branding, or you just look different. If you glance at your website and feel like, “This isn’t me,” it’s time for an update.
You’ve gone through a rebrand
New colors, a new logo, or a new website? Your photos should align with your refreshed identity.
You’re preparing for something big
A new offer, podcast launch, or team expansion is the perfect time to invest in visuals that match your next level.
You’re embarrassed to use your current photos
If you find yourself avoiding posting because your photos feel outdated, that’s a sign it’s time.
Why Waiting for the Perfect Time Doesn’t Work
A lot of business owners hold off on booking a brand photography session because they’re waiting for just the “right” time: The perfect haircut, the perfect season, or maybe the perfect website launch. But, business never stops moving.
If you wait until everything is flawless, you’ll likely delay photos for years, and in the meantime, your audience is seeing outdated visuals that don’t match who you are now.
Brand photos and videos aren’t meant to last forever. They’re tools you’ll update again and again as your business grows.
So instead of asking “When will everything be perfect?” the better question is, “Do my current photos feel aligned with where I am right now?”
Most of my Indianapolis photography clients also ask how often they should update their brand photos. For many, 1-2 times a year is a good rhythm, but it really depends on when your visuals stop feeling like you.
Planning the Timing of Your Branding Session
The “right” time for a session also depends on how it fits into your business and personal calendar. Here are a few things I recommend considering when you’re planning:
Your business calendar
Do you have a launch, website update, or busy season coming up? It’s worth scheduling photos in advance so you’re ready.
Your personal calendar
Think about how you want to show up – your haircut, outfits, or even your energy level during certain seasons of life.
Photographer availability
Brand sessions often book out months ahead, so reaching out sooner helps you avoid rushing.
The earlier you plan, the less stressful it feels, and the more your photos will support your business when you need them most.
You’ve Decided It’s Time for New Brand Photos… Now What?
Once you know it’s time to invest, here’s what to do next:
- Identify what feels off about your current visuals. That helps you set goals for your new session.
- Plan ahead. Sessions book quickly, and planning early makes the whole process less stressful.
- Trust your photographer. When I work with clients, I guide them through everything, from locations to outfits, so their photos and video reflect exactly why they booked in the first place.
